Theater stars know what’s hot in entertainment, fashion and pop culture, so Broadway.com decided it was high time to tap in to the after-hours obsessions of our favorite stage actors. Mad Men favorite Rich Sommer (last seen on Broadway in Harvey) has returned to the stage in Roundabout's off-Broadway production of the stunning new drama The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin. We asked the talented thesp to share his pop culture obsessions, which include everything from meth-related TV dramas to Mormon-related musicals. Read on for Sommer's sensational survey answers!
TV SHOW: Breaking Bad
“I am counting the seconds until Breaking Bad comes back. And I am so sad it'll be the last season."
MOVIE: Boyhood
“The movie I am most anticipating is the same movie I've been anticipating for more than 10 years. It's called Boyhood, and it follows a boy as he ages from 6 to 18 or so. Same actor playing the same character. Over more than 10 years. And it's by Richard Linklater. I am so excited. Only two years or so to go.”
STAGE SHOW (OTHER THAN MY OWN): The Book of Mormon
“I finally saw Book of Mormon, two years late. Oh my goodness. After Urinetown, Avenue Q and now Mormon, is there an envelope remaining to be pushed? Our faces hurt afterwards. It was fantastic.”
SONG OR SINGER
“Really, any showtunes. I am in constant study for my next trip to Marie's Crisis. I am tired of knowing one in ten songs. Gotta up my game."
BOOK: The Magic of Reality
“I just read The Magic of Reality by Richard Dawkins. Even though it's just about the simplest explanation of how the universe works, my brain still hurt from trying to visualize all of it. Just beautiful."
CELEBRITY: David Morse
"I have a crazy crush on David Morse. Getting to work with him this summer has been insane. He's just... he's really good. And I like him, to boot."
REALITY SHOW: The Ultimate Fighter
“Although that PBS documentary on Annie has been getting plenty of play around our place, too. Apparently, my daughter and I have slightly differing tastes."
APP: Ancestry.com Family Tree
“Right now, I'm obsessing over the Ancestry.com Family Tree app. My dad has been into genealogy for a while, but I only started dabbling via the app. It's addictive. And it means that I am now officially an old man."
RANDOM OBSESSION: Nerf Guns
"We have a bunch backstage. Rounding a corner and getting popped in the face by our stage manager is just about the best thing ever. Keeps me on my toes. It's a little less chaotic since the entire cast signed a cease-fire agreement for half hour, but it's still an action-packed trip down the hallway."
